I'm drowning in white satin and silk.
The wedding dress was Mae’s suggestion. Not that I have one--that's rather obvious--but that it be this monstrous thing. Peony lowers it over my head and I wiggle around, until the fitted torso slips into place.
It fits like a glove. Like it was made for me. Like a damn lock and key, trapping me into a life I didn't pick.
My heart is pounding and my breathing is going choppy. Peony leans in, brushing my hair back from my shoulders and murmurs, “Easy, Illy. Hold it together.”
I nod once, forcing my breathing to slow and counting silently. Shoving the panic down and burying it with a smile before Maeve comes in the room with a veil made of antique lace.

I remember him, on the pool deck, and the fury in his eyes when I asked about his dead wife. I remember the way he had stared at me, like a possession and not a person.
